Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by certain moulds. They can show acute or chronic toxic effects towards humans and animals even in low concentrations.
Mycotoxins are also associated with crops that have been stressed during the growth cycle or bad storage condition.
Aflatoxins are commonly found in mouldy nuts and seeds. They are the most carcinogenic compounds known in nature even at very low concentrations. They can also be found in milk from ruminant animals in the form of aflatoxin M1 and M2 as a result of mouldy feeds.
